"Nocturne"

"It has been an honor and challenge to select the works on display in this exhibition. My criteria were based on formal issues: color, line, space, etc. Also, on how the subject of the night was interpreted. I tend to favor works that are personal in nature – more idiosyncratic. When dealing with an issue like the nighttime, it’s easy to fall into cliches, so I was less receptive to works that seemed too obvious or based solely on formula. When dealing with the nocturnal subject, as I have in my career for over thirty years, I still want to experience the mood of the pieces. Seeing that the subject is one to inspire mystery, melancholy, fear, isolation, quiet, solitude, and such, it’s inherently rich for an emotional response. The works on display toughed me in their poetry of the subject."
